| The lab director, Richard W. Gilpin, Ph.D., RBP, CBSP, is President and CEO of R. Gilpin, Limited, a biosafety consulting company and legionella testing laboratory. He is a recognized expert on quantitative testing of Legionella species in warm water containing mechanical equipment. He is a member of the American Biological Safety Associan Alliance with the OSHA Safety and Health Topics page for Legionnaires' Disease. |
| His consulting includes expert witness testimony, environmental microbiology (air sampling, fungi, and legionella), indoor air quality, laboratory and hospital safety, and research compliance in the areas of human subjects, animal research, material transfer agreements, shipping certification, invention disclosures, and research grant/contract reporting. |
| He currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the University of Maryland School of Medicine and Compliance Officer for the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute. |
| Dr. Gilpin formerly served as the Biosafety Officer at the University of Maryland Baltimore and Biosafety Officer at the Johns Hopkins University and the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, MD. |
| He was formerly Assistant Professor of Medicine at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His prior position was Associate Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. |
| He served as one of three R&D Managers at Becton Dickinson Diagnostic systems. His team of 17 staff supported 12 product lines. |
| Dr. Gilpin is a basic/clinical/industrial research microbiologist with more than 20 years experience in research, product development and environmental health. |
| He has directed microbiology courses for second year medical students, graduate students, and pharmaceutical company marketing personnel. |
| Dr. Gilpin also co-directs an internationally recognized biosafety course entitled Control of Biohazards. |
| He is a Registered Biological Safety Professional, a Certified Biological Safety Professional, a past Councilor (elected Officer), and past Chair of the Technical Resources Committee of the American Biological Safety Association (ABSA). He is a past president of the Chesapeake Area Biological Safety Association (ChABSA) and a 35 year member of the American Society for Microbiology (ASM). |
